If you are planning a new build with proper home control, two names come up again and again: KNX and Control4. Both can run lighting, heating, shading and security from one system. They come from opposite philosophies, though, and the difference shows up years after the build, when you want to change something or need help.
This guide compares them from the point of view of the people who live in the home: who installs it, who can change it, what happens if your installer moves on, and how long it lasts. We are not neutral, because Baulogic is built on KNX, but we will be clear about where Control4 is the better fit.
What is the difference between KNX and Control4?
KNX is an open standard. It is a shared language for home and building control, used by hundreds of manufacturers worldwide, and maintained by the KNX Association. A KNX home can include switches, sensors and heating controls from different makers, and any certified KNX professional can work on it.
Control4 is a single-company platform. The hardware and software come from one company and are sold, installed and programmed through its network of authorised dealers. That gives you one joined-up ecosystem, with your dealer as the gatekeeper to it.
Everything else in this comparison follows from that one difference.
Who installs and programmes each system?
A Control4 system is installed and programmed by an authorised Control4 dealer. You are choosing a dealer as much as a product, and the quality of your system depends heavily on theirs.
A KNX system is traditionally programmed on site by a KNX integrator using specialist software, late in the build. It is very reliable once done, but it needs a specialist at exactly the point when the programme is tightest.
Baulogic changes the KNX half of that picture, as we explain in what KNX is, and why it matters. We design and programme your system off-site, so it arrives labelled and ready to connect, and your own electrician installs it during the normal first and second fix.
Who can change things after you move in?
This is where most homeowners feel the difference.
With Control4, you can adjust some things yourself in the app, such as schedules and simple automations. Deeper changes to how the home behaves usually go back to your dealer.
With a traditional KNX installation, changes usually go back to the integrator who programmed it. With Baulogic, scenes, schedules and Smart Events are yours to adjust in the app, whenever you like. Want the landing lights to come on gently at 6am in winter, or the heating to drop when a window opens? You set it up yourself.
See how this works in practice with open-window heating.
What happens if your installer moves on?
Homes outlast businesses, so it is worth asking who looks after the system in fifteen years.
If your Control4 dealer closes or stops supporting you, you need another authorised Control4 dealer to take the system over.
Because KNX is an open standard, any KNX professional can pick up a KNX installation. With Baulogic, you also have a direct relationship with us as the designer and supplier of your system: after handover, you come to us, and most questions are resolved remotely.
Which is more reliable day to day?
Both can be very reliable when they are well designed and well installed.
KNX is hardwired and decentralised: each device carries its own programming, so everyday control runs locally over the home's own wiring and keeps working if the internet drops. That is a big part of why KNX is used in commercial buildings that cannot afford downtime.
With Baulogic, nothing you rely on day to day needs Wi-Fi or an internet connection. Remote access from your phone and our remote diagnostics use a secure cloud connection.
We go into this in more detail in why hardwired home automation is more reliable than wireless.
How long will each system last?
A home control system should be planned to last as long as the wiring behind it. KNX is a long-established standard with devices from many manufacturers, so replacement parts and new devices remain available over the long term.
The devices we use are designed to last as long as the home's electrical wiring, or longer. That longevity is a large part of what you are paying for.
When is Control4 the better fit?
Control4 is a capable platform, and for some homes it is the right call. If your priority is home cinema, multi-room audio and AV, with lighting and heating as supporting acts, a good Control4 dealer can deliver a polished, AV-led experience.
If your priority is a home that is comfortable, efficient and easy to live with for decades, with lighting, heating, shading and security at its core, KNX is usually the stronger foundation.
How does the cost compare?
Neither platform has a simple price list, because both depend on the size of the home and what you want to control.
The bigger difference is cost certainty. Dealer-programmed systems are often priced partly on labour, which can grow as the project changes. Baulogic systems start from around £5 per square foot of the home you are building, covering design, hardware, off-site configuration and software. Every project is quoted individually, and once quoted, the price is fixed.
KNX and Control4 can both run a beautiful home. The real question is who you want in control of it once the builders have gone. Control4 keeps your dealer at the centre. KNX keeps the home open, and with Baulogic, it arrives pre-configured for your electrician to install and stays in your hands to adjust.
If you are weighing up the two for a new build, the best time to decide is before first fix, while the cabling plan is still open. Book a free design consultation and we will show you what a KNX system would look like for your plans. For a direct product comparison, read Baulogic vs Control4.
