St John's College is one of the oldest and largest colleges in Cambridge, and maintaining the college buildings - some dating from the 16th century and including the oldest secular building in Cambridge - is a constant battle.
Recently renovated college buildings have been specified with a Baulogic lighting control system utilising DALI and KNX to simplify various maintenance tasks, including the requirement for the college to periodically test the emergency lighting system. Baulogic’s KNX-based control system fully automates this task, eliminating hours of meticulous record keeping, and sending the maintenance department an email containing the results of the tests, which are automatically initiated according to a pre-defined schedule.
A daily email to the facility manager from a GIRA FacilityServer (which is incorporated into the Baulogic KNX lighting control system) lists any faults with the light fittings and guides the site electricians to those lamps which need to be replaced. The status of every light fitting in the entire system can be seen on a touch panel in the college’s maintenance department, and in the event of hardware errors, each individual lighting circuit can be overridden on or off.
To further optimise the maintenance process, the lighting control system can be accessed from an iPad as electricians walk around the college buildings.
